LAS VEGAS (AP) - Romel Beck scored 27 points and Jerel Blassingame added 16 points and 11 assists Monday night as UNLV defeated the L.A. Stars 100-90 in the Runnin' Rebels' first exhibition game of the 2003-04 season at the Thomas & Mack Center.
With the game tied at 80 with five minutes to play, Beck scored five straight points in giving the Runnin' Rebels the lead for good.
Blassingame's 3-pointer with 1:04 left put UNLV up by double digits for the first time in the contest.
Odartey Blankson finished with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting for the Rebels as they connected on 61.7 percent of their field goal attempts. Blankson added a team-high 10 rebounds for the double-double.
UNLV led 44-39 at halftime as it erased an early 9-2 deficit. James Peters had back-to-back lay-ins to give the Runnin' Rebels their first lead, 34-33, with 3:52 to play in the half.
For the Stars, Jelani Janisse scored 23 of his game-high 29 points in the second half, but the team of former college players dropped their sixth decision on a seven-game tour.
Bryon Wilson added 18 points for the Stars, while Derrick Anderson and Anthony White each added 12.
The Rebels continue exhibition play Saturday against the Houston Superstars and open the regular season Nov. 21 against Delaware State.
