OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The UNLV women's swimming and diving team, in search of its first conference crown since 1992, jumped into first place at the Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at Oklahoma City Community College with 251 points. Three-time defending conference champion BYU leads the men's field with 342 points.
UNLV trails the Cougars in men's action with 195 points, followed by Wyoming (177), Air Force (168) and Utah (162). The Rams hold the No. 2 spot in the women's events with 241 points, followed by BYU (215.50), Utah (188), New Mexico (181), Air Force (145.50), Wyoming (139) and San Diego State (78).
UNLV sophomore Jonathan Hugo set a new Mountain West Conference and school record in the men's 50-yard freestyle with a time of 19.74. The previous record was 19.84 by Piotr Krzyskow in 2001. Joe Bartoch finished second in 20.07. Both times are NCAA provisional qualifying times.
UNLV set a new MWC record in the men's 400-yard medley relay. The team of Jonathan Hugo, Patrick Adams, Michael Day and Joe Bartoch won in a time of 3:14.88. The Rebels captured their second title in the event in four years (2000 and 2003).
UNLV also set a new MWC record in the women's 400-yard medley relay. The team of Raluca Udroiu, Shayna Burns, Julie Unrau and Jessie Bradshaw won in 3:44.41. The Rebels captured their second title in the event in four years (2000 and 2003).
Sophomore Alyson Noble successfully defended her 500-yard freestyle title with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:52.57.
Day three events begin Friday, Feb. 21, with preliminary events at 8 a.m. PST and finals competition at 4 p.m. The MWC Swimming & Diving Championships conclude Saturday, Feb. 22, following the 4 p.m. finals events and the announcement of the individual and team awards.
