OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Both the UNLV men's and women's swimming teams have moved into third place at the 2003 Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at Oklahoma City Community College. Three-time defending conference champion BYU leads the men's and women's field with 620 and 446 points, respectively.
Air Force trails the Cougars in men's action with 403 points, followed by UNLV (395), Wyoming (369) and Utah (291). The Colorado State Rams hold the No. 2 spot in the women's events with 416.50 points, followed by UNLV (383), Utah (347), New Mexico (269), Air Force (220.50), Wyoming (210) and San Diego State (158).
Sophomore Raluca Udroiu set a Mountain West Conference and UNLV school record in the women's 100-yard backstroke with a NCAA qualifying time of 54.60. The previous MWC record was 54.88 by Kristen Schneider (Colorado State) in 2001.
Alyson Noble won the 500 free in an NCAA B-cut time of 4:52.57.
On the men's side, Jonathan Hugo and Joe Bartoch went 1-2 in the 50 free. Hugo won in 19.81, while Bartoch took second in 20.07. Both are NCAA qualifying times.
UNLV capped the day with a pair of victories in the 400 medley relay. The women's team of Udroiu, Shayna Burns, Julie Unrau and Jessie Bradshaw won in an NCAA qualifying time of 3:44.41 and the men's team of Hugo, Patrick Adams, Michael Day and Bartoch won in a record MWC record time of 3:14.88.
The MWC Swimming & Diving Championships conclude Saturday, Feb. 22, following the 4 p.m. finals events and the announcement of the individual and team awards.
