AUSTIN, Texas - Although darkness set in on six teams in the 18-team field at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate on Monday, the UNLV men's golf team sits in third place after 36 holes at three-under par.
The Rebels shot team rounds of 289 and 284 at the par-72, 6,906-yard Austin Country Club. They sit 17 strokes behind host Texas, who leads the field at 20-under.
The Longhorns' J.J. Wall and Jason Hartwick were the key individuals responsible for the success as the duo finished the day in first and second respectively. Wall carded a 65 in the opening round and sits 10-under par after 36 holes. Hartwick is tied for second at eight-under with Arkansas' Andrew Dahl.
Five strokes off the lead is UNLV sophomore Travis Whisman. Whisman scored rounds of 68 and 71 and is tied for seventh overall.
JC Deacon ranks among the top 20, checking in a 16th at two-under par. He is followed by Ryan Moore, who is even and tied for 26th; Brien Davis, who sits in 62nd at six-over; and Mitch Carlson, who is tied for 71st at nine-over.
Second-round play will finish Tuesday morning before the final 18 holes are played.
