March 31, 2003

LAS VEGAS - BYU senior first baseman Jake Stubblefield and UNLV freshman righthander Matt Luca are the Mountain West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Stubblefield and Luca are first-time award winners.

Luca, from Galveston, Texas (Ball HS), tossed the first-ever no-hitter in MWC play and the first since 1990 for UNLV as he tallied 11 strikeouts in a 5-0 win over San Diego State. Luca, who was also named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week for his efforts, allowed only three Aztecs to reach base.

Stubblefield, from San Diego, Calif. (Ricks JC), went 6-for-14 (.429) from the plate last week in helping the Cougars to a five-game win streak, including a sweep of conference rival Utah (9-5, 6-4, 10-5). Stubblefield went 1-for-3 with two RBI in game one vs. Utah and posted his best performance of the week in game two vs. the Utes, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBI. His two-run double in the fifth inning of game one put the Cougars up 6-5, and his two-run double in the seventh inning of game two broke a 4-4 tie. He closed out the week with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate with a double and two RBI in game three. For the week, Stubblefield totaled seven RBI, three doubles and a home run.
