LAS VEGAS - Already assured its worst record in school history, the undermanned UNLV men's tennis team was dealt another blow in the draw for the Mountain West Conference Championship, which begins Thursday.
The Rebels (2-12 and 0-5 in the league) must face tournament host BYU in the opening round. The Cougars (11-9 overall) finished in a three-way tie for first with San Diego State and New Mexico at 4-1 but earned the third seeding because of tie-breakers.
In a match played indoors because of inclement weather, BYU defeated UNLV 6-1 in the Rebels' regular-season finale way back on April 5, also in Provo, Utah.
The winner of Thursday's match will move on to the semifinals while the loser will drop into consolation play, all scheduled for Friday. The championship is Saturday.
