SAN DIEGO - UNLV had one of two singles entries and a doubles team advance through qualifying into the main draw of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women's West Regional, which began Thursday on the campus of San Diego State.
Sophomore Mery Constanti posted two singles wins to survive. She downed Cal State Northridge's Kasia Krasinska 6-1, 6-2 in the early round and then outlasted Cal State Fullerton's May Ly Tran 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7).
Constanti also qualified in doubles as she and partner Cindy Treber enjoyed a bye and then downed Hui Leow and Izabela Mijic of UC Irvine 8-3 to advance.
The remaining Lady Rebel in qualifying was Claire Smith, who won her first-round match before being eliminated later in the day.
UNLV now has six players in the 64-player main draw for singles and three duos in the 32-team main draw for doubles, all of which gets under way Friday. The tournament runs through Monday.
