TEMPE, Ariz. - The UNLV men's swimming and diving team opened up its season with an impressive 152.5-141.5 upset at Arizona State, while the Rebel women fell to the Sun Devils 214-86 in the first meet of the season for both teams on Friday afternoon.
UNLV showed a lot of depth on the men's side in winning the meet, with five different Rebels all winning one individual event, while Joe Bartoch was a double-winner. The meet was a complete turnaround from the last meeting between the two last season, in which ASU claimed a 216-82 victory. The Rebels began with a one-two finish in the 200-yard medley relay, giving them a 15-2 lead after the first event and they never looked back. The two wins for Bartoch came in the 100 free (45.99) and the 100 fly (49.79), while he also swam on the winning 200 medley relay. Also winning events for UNLV were Jonathan Hugo in the 100 back (51.35), Patrick Adams in the 100 breast (56.63), Michael Day in the 200 fly (1:50.04), Brandon Nelms in the 50 free (20.74), and Kyle Tannehill in the 200 back (1:51.37).
Arizona State won 15 of 16 events on the women's side to give the Sun Devils the victory. Shayna Burns was the one event-winner for UNLV, taking the 100 breast in a time of 1:05.53. Second place finishers included Julie babin in the 1000 free and 400 IM, Jessie Bradshaw in the 100 and 200 back, Kari Nettenstrom in the 500 free and 200 fly, Burns in the 200 breast, and Nichole McLean on the 3-meter board.
