LAS VEGAS - UNLV junior and top-seeded Henner Nehles won two matches to earn a spot in the finals on the third day of action at the 2004 Wilson/ITA Mountain Region Men's Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Saturday.
Nehles was one of two Rebels played on Saturday, as Aviram Salomon earned a win over Colorado's Marko Bundalo before falling to Boise State's Matias Silva 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals. Silva and Nehles will play in the regional final on Sunday, and by reaching the final both players have earned a spot in the national indoor championships in November. Nehles won his quarterfinal match over Denver's Adam Holmstrom (6-3, 3-6, 6-1), and posted a 6-1, 7-5 win over Montanta State's Federico Ueltschi.
"Henner and Aviram continue to improve and play better and better in every match, and it was great to see what they did today," said UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook. "Henner is really showing that he's on the way to becoming one of the top players in the nation with his performance this weekend."
More than 120 players from 16 western teams have gathered for the event, which concludes Sunday with the singles championship, and the semifinals and championship matches in doubles play.
