LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's golf program has received signed national letters of intent from four student-athletes to enroll at UNLV and play golf for the Rebels starting next fall, head coach Dwaine Knight announced Thursday.
Seung Su Han, Blake Trimble, Eddie Olson and Brett Kanda are the four players that signed during the early signing period and will join the team for the 2005-06 season.
Su Han, a senior from Bradenton, Fla., who attends the Leadbetter Academy, is a three-time All-American and the 2002 Player of the Year. Originally from Korea, he advanced to the round of 16 at the 2004 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.
"Seung is certainly one of the top student-athletes in the nation this year as far as his record," Knight said. "He brings a lot of experience and a quality record to the table and is one of the top recruits in the country. This year he spent more time playing in more general amateur tournaments and not playing as vast a junior schedule as in the past, so he stepped up his play a lot."
Trimble, a senior at Torrey Pines High School is from Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. He was the 2002 CIF state high school champion as a freshman and was a member of the 2004 CIF team champions. He finished sixth at the 2004 Las Vegas Founders Junior Golf Championship and recorded a top-10 finish at the Rolex Tournament of Champions in Sunriver, Ore.
"Blake is a very solid player," said Knight. "He is fundamentally sound and has really started to come into his own this year on the national scene. He has had some high finishes this year in particular in junior golf and we feel he has a really bright future."
Olson, a senior at Aptof High School in Aptof, Calif., was the 2004 CIF state high school champion. He advanced to the second round of the 2004 California State Amateur and won the 2004 FCWT Sun Devil Junior Golf Classic at ASU's Karsten Golf Course.
"Eddie has been one of the hottest players in Northern California this year winning numerous junior events," Knight said. "He has drawn a lot of attention to himself becuse of his oustanding play this summer and we feel like he is a significant sign for us. He has had some great rounds at some storied courses this year and has the ability to shoot low rounds."
Kanda, a senior from La Crescenta, Calif., finished second at the 2003 Las Vegas Founders Junior Golf Championship. He was the MVP of the Prep League in Southern California and a two-time United States Junior participant.
"Brett has a bigtime game and great fundamentals," Knight said. "He has been coached by Will Neal, who has worked with a lot of oustanding juniors and his best golf is definitely ahead of him."
