LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's swimming and diving team won its first meet of the year with an upset of defending Mountain West champion BYU 123-98, while the 22nd-ranked Cougar men won a tight meet 122.5-107.5 over the UNLV men's squad on Saturday afternoon. Both UNLV teams posted wins over Toronto, 123-22 for the women (2-3 overall, 1-1 MWC) , 107.5-11 for the Rebel men (3-1 overall, 1-1 MWC).

It was a tight meet the entire way on the men's side between UNLV and BYU, and the Rebels held a 98-95 lead with just two events left, but a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 breast and a first-place finish in the 400 yard free lifted the Cougars to the victory. Leading UNLV on the day was Kyle Goodrich with wins in both the 500 free (4:40.66) and 1000 free (9:41.29). Also winning events for the Rebel men were Brandon Nelms in the 50 free (20.85), and Kyle Tannehill in the 200 back (1:52.07).

The UNLV women won with its depth, as five different Rebels all won one event, while they also took wins in the 200 free and 200 medley relays. Posting first place finishes were Katie Wronn in the 50 free (24.33), Julie babin in the 400 IM (4:27.99), Daryl Packard in the 1 meter diving (254.93), Marina Sandback in the 100 free (52.54), and Raluca Udroiu in the 200 back (2:02.18).

Next up for UNLV, the women take on another conference rival as they face New Mexico on Tuesday at 6 pm in Buchanan Natatorium.
