Rebels Swim Past Lobos

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's swimming and diving team won four of the first five events and used a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 butterfly to win its third straight meet, 124-116 over New Mexico in Mountain West Conference action on Tuesday night from Buchanan Natatorium. UNLV evened its record to 3-3, and 2-1 in the MWC, while the Lobos fell to 1-4, 1-3 in league action.

Raluca Udroiu won two events on the night to pace the Rebels, and also got UNLV off to a hot start by helping the 200 yard medley relay to a first place finish in 1:47.96, while the Rebels also took second in the event. Kari Nettenstrom then followed with a win in the 1000 yard free, touching the wall in a time of 10:42.13. New Mexico cut the lead in the meet to 33-22 after a 1-3-4 finish in the 200 free, but Katie Wronn took the 50 free (24.51) and Udroiu won the 200 IM (2:07.94) to give the Rebels a 24-point lead.

UNM's Becca Barras then won the first of her two diving wins on the night in the 1M board (she also won on the 3M), but Shayna Burns led a 1-2-3 performance by UNLV in the 100 fly (59.55) to push the meet out of range. Udroiu added a win in the 100 back (57.11), and the Rebels exhibitioned the 200 breast to account for the final team score.

Next up for the Rebels is a dual meet against conference rival Colorado State on Saturday at 2 pm in Buchanan Natatorium.
