Welcome In The Middle

March 20, 2004

LAS VEGAS - The 46th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team won its fifth straight match, 5-2 over Middle Tennessee State at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Saturday.

Playing in unusually hot March weather, the Lady Rebels improved to 9-3, including 9-1 at home, while the Blue Raiders fell to 8-5 overall.

UNLV began the day by taking two of three doubles matches for one team point. Lady Rebel teams won at courts No. 2 and 3 to offset a defeat at the top spot where the nation's 22nd-ranked duo was victorious.

In singles play, UNLV's Gyorgyi Zsiros got her biggest win of the season when she upset 55th-ranked Manon Kruse 6-2, 7-6, which was only the visitor's second loss of the season in 13 matches.

MTSU got points with victories on No. 2 and No. 3 but the bottom half of the UNLV lineup was nearly flawless, taking all three matches in straight sets. Winning for the hosts was Cindy Treber at No. 4, Claire Smith at No. 5 and Mery Constanti on Court Six.

The Lady Rebels continue their 10-match homestand by hosting No. 42 Ohio State on Tuesday beginning at 10 a.m., and then open Mountain West Conference play vs. Utah on Friday and vs. No. 25 BYU on Saturday, both at Fertitta.
