Long Beach, Calif. - Starting races in puddles and leaping into pits of muddy sand didn't stop athletes from all over the nation participating this Saturday in the Springco-Long Beach Invitational. Four rain soaked members of the Rebel track team recorded top finishes in individual events for UNLV in the dreariest weather yet this season.
Halima Decree laid a path for the Rebels as she earned a first place finish in the 100 meter dash (11.66), her only event of the day. Senior Tiffany Smith jumped a season best (38-6.75) in the triple jump, giving her a three inch edge over her nearest competitor and a fourth place finish. Two seventh place showings rounded up the top performances for UNLV. Lacey Bridges' javelin throw of 117-08 marked a season best, and junior Kiyota Reed ran the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 14.21.
UNLV also grabbed a fourth place finish in the 4x100 meter relay (46.95). Relay team members consisted of Michel Hunt, Gaven Jones, Christine Spence and Halima Decree.
The Rebels will host a home meet this Saturday at UNLV beginning at 9am.
