LAS VEGAS - The 48th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team improved to 3-1 in the Mountain West Conference with a 6-1 neutral-site victory over Wyoming at the SDSU Tennis Courts Friday.
The Lady Rebels improved to 13-5 overall while the Cowgirls fell to 9-8 and 0-4.
UNLV began the morning by sweeping three doubles matches for one team point.
In singles play, UNLV got straight-set victories from Anne Claire Ortiz-Luis at No. 3, Cindy Treber at No. 4, Claire Smith at No. 5 and Mery Constanti at No. 6.
The two remaining matches went into third-set super-tiebreakers, which the teams split. Winning for UNLV was No. 1 player Gyorgyi Zsiros, whose 6-4, 6-7 1-0 (10-2) victory marked the junior's 62nd career singles triumph, which moved her into a tie with Marie Linusson (1999-2002) at seventh on the school's all-time list.
"I have to give Wyoming credit at (singles positions) No. 1 and 2," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "They played a high level of tennis and both matches could have gone either way, but we had some nice wins up and down the lineup today."
UNLV completes its trip to San Diego by facing Colorado State Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
