IRVINE, Calif. - The UNLV jumpers were the highlight of the meet for the Rebel track & field squad, as Tiffany Smith and Christine Spence each won one event on Sunday in the 2004 Steve Scott Invitational at Anteater Stadium. The meet, the last of the season for UNLV before the Mountain West Conference Championships, was hosted by UC Irvine.
Spence won the first event of the day for UNLV, tying her career-best with a jump of 5-10.00 in the high jump. She also added a sixth-place finish in the 400m hurdles (61.46). Smith claimed her win in the triple jump with a distance of 40-02.25.
Halima Decree turned in two top-six finishes on the day, placing fourth in the 100m dash with a time of 11.75, and sixth in the 200m in 23.88, which qualifies her for the first time this season for the NCAA Regionals in the 200m dash. Also turning in top performances for the Rebels was Kiyota Reed, fifth in the 100m hurdles (13.83), while Miesha McClendon was sixth (14.52). Michele Suszek broke her own school record in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 11:15.51, good enough for third place.
For the second straight meet Angie Turner broke the school record in the hammer throw, this time breaking her week old mark with a throw of 151-00.
The Rebels will next return home to host the 2004 Mountain West Conference Championships, from May 12-15 at the Myron Partridge Stadium/Sheila Tarr Smith Field on the UNLV campus.
