LAS VEGAS - UNLV's contingent saw a successful first day at the 2004 Women's Tennis Fall Invitational, which opened at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Friday.

The tourney, which is using an individual-results format, includes players from LSU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Minnesota and Hawaii.

Picking up wins in singles for the Lady Rebels were newcomer Elena Gantcheva in the top flight (6-7, 6-3, 6-1 over Lauren Fitzgerald of Hawaii), Anne Claire Ortiz-Luis in the second flight (6-2, 7-6 over Zana Masnic of Oklahoma State), Cindy Treber in the third flight (6-2, 6-0 over Paige Mainor of Hawaii), Claire Smith in the fourth flight (6-3, 6-3 over Kana Aikawa of Hawaii) and rookie Stephanie Serrano in Flight Six (6-0, 6-0 over Jenna Tellefsen of Minnesota). Also, UNLV split its two doubles matches as Ortiz-Luis and Mery Contstanti won 8-2 in the fourth flight.

The semifinals for the singles are Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. Finals for doubles play will follow. The singles finals are set for Sunday. Play in the losers' bracket will also begin Saturday.
