LAS VEGAS - Seven of the eight seeded singles players advanced to the quarterfinals of the Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships, which kicked off at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV Friday.
UNLV freshman sensation Elena Gantcheva, ranked 21st in the nation and seeded fifth in this tournament, won twice to advance. She opened with a 6-1, 6-3 over Fallon Koon of South Carolina and then swept 100th-ranked Joslynn Burkett of Arizona State 6-1, 6-4. Gantcheva improved her record to 16-1 overall and 7-0 vs. ranked players. She will face 10th-ranked and third-seeded Shadisha Robinson of Georgia in Saturday's quarterfinal round.
In Flight Two, a pair of Lady Rebels advanced. Senior Anne Claire Ortiz-Luis enjoyed a first round bye and then rallied past Grace Blakely of South Carolina 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Next up for Ortiz-Luis is Joanna Kao of Stanford. Also, after a first-round bye, UNLV sophomore transfer Linda Tempelfelde came from way back to outlast Justine Walsh of South Carolina 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 in what was her first match at the Division One level. She will now take on Jessica Leitch of Arizona State.
"Today we were fortunate enough to see some outstanding tennis played up and down our courts," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "Elena stepped up once again against national competition and now has an extremely tough test in the next round. I am happy that Anne Claire came through to earn a big win over a player from the powerful Southeastern Conference. Also, Linda showed a lot of heart in her debut by winning a third-set tiebreaker over a quality opponent."
In doubles action, UNLV's lone entry in Flight One also won. Gantcheva and fellow-freshman Sharon Marin edged Kao and Theresa Logar of Stanford 8-6 to move into the quarterfinals. In Flight Two, the Lady Rebel duo of Ortiz-Luis and Tempelfelde downed Blakely and Justine Walsh 8-6. The tournament, which is free and open to the public, will hold its singles quarterfinals and semifinals Saturday after the doubles quarterfinals open the day at 9:30 a.m. PST.
