LAS VEGAS - Unseeded and unranked Lejla Hodzic of Stanford upset the Nos. 1 and 6 seeds to advance to Sunday's final of the Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships, which continued play at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV Saturday.
Hodzik, a freshman who improved her career record to 11-0, will face third-seeded and 10th-ranked Shadisha Robinson of Georgia for the championship beginning at 10:30 a.m. PST.
All of host UNLV's players were eliminated on Saturday. Lady Rebel freshman sensation Elena Gantcheva, ranked 21st in the nation and seeded fifth, was defeated for only the second time as a collegian (16-2) as Robinson ousted her in the quarterfinal round 6-4, 6-4
Both Lady Rebels still alive in Flight Two of singles were dispatched in Saturday's early round. Stanford's Joanna Kao swept senior Anne Claire Ortiz-Luis 6-2, 6-2 while Arizona State's Jessica Leitch ousted freshman Linda Tempelfelde 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles action, UNLV's two entries were also eliminated. In Flight One, the Georgia duo of Robinson and Caroline Basu outlasted Gantcheva and fellow-freshman Sharon Marin 8-5. In Flight Two, UNLV's Ortiz-Luis and Tempelfelde were defeated by Tennessee's Blakeley Griffith and Ashley Robards 8-2.
The tournament, which is free and open to the public, will begin with the doubles semifinals at 9:30 a.m. The doubles championship will be decided immediately following the completion of the singles title match.
