REDMOND, Wash. - Da Sol Chung is tied for first place after the freshman shot an even-par 72 on Monday in the opening round of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational played at the Sahalee Country Club.
No. 11 UNLV sits in a three-way tie for fifth with a team score of 306 (+18), as teams shot high scores due to a rain that started falling early in the first round.
Every squad in the 14-team field, which includes six teams in Golfweek's latest top-25 poll, finished the first round above par, with the best team score of the day belonging to No. 1 Pepperdine, which managed to shot 294 (+6) in the wet conditions. Chung is tied at the top of the leaderboard with Jenni Tangtiphaiboontana of Stanford, as no one individual was able to break par either.
Chung started the round strong, rolling in three birdies compared to one bogey on the front nine and was two-under at the turn. But she carded four bogies on the back nine and managed just two more birdies the rest of the way to finish the day at even par.
Elena Kurokawa's round was very similar to Chung, as Kurokawa had a solid front nine but struggled on the last nine holes with two double bogies and two bogies for a five-over 77 and is tied for 27th. Grace Woo is tied for 36th (78, +6), Seema Sadekar is tied for 43rd (79, +7) and Allison Chell is tied for 56th (81, +9).
Arizona State and Stanford are tied for second with a score of 300 (+12), followed by Arizona in fourth (302, +14) with UNLV, Long Beach State and BYU all tied for fifth.
The tournament continues Tuesday with teams scheduled to tee off 10:15 a.m. (PDT) on the par-72, 6,190-yard course.
