Go To Your Quarters

Oct. 20, 2005

LAS VEGAS - UNLV seniors Joel Kielbowicz and Romain "Go-Go" Massaro both won twice on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2005 Wilson/ITA Region 7 Men's Tennis Championships at the Darling Memorial Tennis Center.

Kielbowicz, ranked 85th nationally and seeded 11th, first dispatched 20th-seeded Marek Dvorak of Colorado 6-1, 6-2, and then ousted fifth-seeded and 97th-ranked Max Jones of New Mexico 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 16.

Massaro outlasted Graeme Kassautzki of UNM 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 and then stunned fourth seeded and 95th-ranked Federico Ueltschi of Montana State 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

In consolation action, the three other Rebels entered -- Jonathan Hooper, Wes Burrows and Martin Redelinghuys -- all won their first matches before all falling in the second round.

In doubles play UNLV was perfect in moving two teams into Friday's round of 16. Kielbowicz and Burrows downed Christian Halligan and Jeff Pfiefer of New Mexico State 8-4 while Hooper and Redelinghuys shocked fourth-seeded Jose Lechuga and Nima Roshan of BYU 8-5 to advance.

"This was a big day for us," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "Joel and Romain both played solid tennis against good opponents and stepped up as senior leaders of this team. The doubles wins, especially Hooper and Redelinghuys beating a team that won this tournament two years ago, were huge for us. We look forward to some great matches on Friday."

There will be one round of singles and two rounds of doubles on Friday.

Members from 16 western teams are facing off as individuals through Sunday in both singles and doubles. No less than 17 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 3-6 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by The Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus.
