LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's cross country team travels to Colorado for the Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships, set for Saturday morning at the Collindale Golf Course in Fort Collins, Colo.
It will be a young Rebel squad taking the course for cross country coach Pablo Sanchez, as four newcomers are in the lineup, including three true freshmen. Just two runners that ran at last year's MWC champioship meet will run on Saturday morning and they are seniors Katie Hughes and Leta Rose.
Leading the Rebels will be Jenni Shearer, a freshman from Fort Wayne, Ind., who has been the squad's most consistent runner this fall. Shearer has been UNLV's highest finisher at every meet this season and is coming off her two best performance of the year with an 11th-place finish at the UNLV Invite and a fourth-place finish at the Sacramento State Open.
Filling out the lineup will be freshmen Ali Ainsworth and Ashley Lif along with sophomore transfer Janessa Hoppe.
Saturday's meet will start with the men's race at 9:00 a.m. (PDT) and be followed by the women's 6k race at 10:00 a.m. (PDT). BYU, which has won the past six conference crowns, is favored to repeat as champions in the women's race.
