LAS VEGAS - Host UNLV only has two doubles teams still alive in the main draw after the first day of action at the Rebel Men's Tennis Fall Classic at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Friday.
Romain Massaro and Wes Burrows won their first-round match 9-8 over Rawl Martin and Johnny Thornton of Tennessee while Joel Kielbowicz and David Campbell won 8-3 over Sammy Struyf and Dan Buikema of Alabama.
UNLV's singles contingent, however, turned in a combined record of 2-6 as its top player, 85th-ranked Kielbowicz, was upset by Tennessee's Kaden Hensel 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The program's two victories came in the first round where Campbell outlasted Struyf 5-7, 7-5, 7-6, before falling to 34th-ranked Oscar Posado 6-3, 7-5 in the quarterfinals. Also winning was Burrows, 6-3, 6-1 over Thornton, before losing to Oklahoma's Lee Gregg 6-0, 6-1 later in the day.
"We had a rough day in singles today -- that is the bottom line" UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "We have a couple of guys battling injuries and the flu and hopefully we can bounce back tomorrow in consolation play."
