OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - A Mountain West Conference record performance by the men's 200 yard medley relay highlighted action for UNLV on the first day of the 2005 MWC Swimming and Diving Championships, held at Oklahoma City Community College.
Jonathan Hugo, Patrick Adams, Joe Bartoch, and Brandon Nelms teamed up to give UNLV the 200 medley relay title for the fifth time in the six-year history of the meet (2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005). With a time of 1:27.02, they broke their own conference record set last year (1:28.55). The Rebels also added a fourth place finish in the 800 free relay with a time of 6:41.87.
On the women's side, UNLV took second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.49, just .48 behind first place Wyoming. The Rebels then took fifth in the 800 free relay in 6:41.87. In the 1-meter diving, freshman Daryl Packard led UNLV with a fifth place finish, posting a score of 253.95. Nichole McLean also finaled for UNLV, taking seventh with a score of 220.90, while Jessica Field was 16th at 206.20.
The Rebel men are in fourth place after the first three events with 70 points. BYU leads the men's competition with 122 points, while Wyoming is second at 109, Utah third at 107, and Air Force is fifth at 65. On the women's side, UNLV is holding fifth at 84. BYU is top on the women's side as well with 108, followed by New Mexico with 90. Wyoming is third at 89, Utah fourth at 87, Colorado State is sixth with 74 points, San Diego State is seventh with 49, while Air Force rounds out the field at eighth with 46.
The four-day meet continues tomorrow and will conclude on Saturday.
