LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's team lost to Tulane in its own tournament for the second consecutive season, this time in the championship match of the fourth annual Lady Rebel Classic at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Sunday.
The 48th-ranked Lady Rebels (3-1), who were playing without No. 3 starter Sharon Marin because of injury, tasted defeat for the first time this season while No. 15 Tulane improved to 8-4 overall with the 4-0 final.
Starting with singles play under perfect playing conditions, the Green Wave got straight-set wins on courts 2, 4, 5 and 6 to clinch it. The remaining two matches were then halted, including at the top spot where No. 21 ranked Lady Rebel freshman Elena Gantcheva was just two games from a victory. Doubles play was then canceled.
"We just ran out of gas while going against a legitimate top-10 team today," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said.
In the third-place match, No. 21 Fresno State fought off No. 30 New Mexico 4-3. Oklahoma State and Texas Tech also posted final-day victories in the consolation bracket.
UNLV will next be in action on Friday when it hosts Utah State beginning at 1 p.m.
