LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's tennis team opened its 2005 home schedule by whitewashing Northern Arizona 7-0 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Friday.
Playing in perfect weather conditions, the Rebels did not lose a set en route to picking up their first victory of the season (1-2), while the Lumberjacks fell to 0-4. UNLV now leads the all-time series between the schools 18-2.
The host squad, which featured two starters making their collegiate debuts, started the day by sweeping three doubles matches for one team point.
In singles play, 38th-ranked Henner Nehles eased by Jeremy Coll at the top position 6-2, 6-2. No. 100 Aviram Salomon downed Thibault Schram 6-4, 6-2, Joel Kielbowicz defeated Jamie Maxwell 6-0, 6-3, and Romain Massaro won a first-set tiebreaker to get by Henrik Lilja 7-6, 6-0 at the fourth spot.
Rookies Jonathan Hooper at No. 5 and Martin Redelinghuys at the bottom spot, both won their first Rebel singles matches in straight sets.
"It's always nice to start out with a win in your home opener," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "We got some nice debut performances today but we know we have some work to do as well."
The Rebels will play two dual matches on Saturday and take Sunday off. UNLV faces Loyola Marymount at 10 a.m. and then takes on Weber State at approximately 3 p.m.
