Lady Rebels Clip Falcons

LAS VEGAS - The 35th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team moved to 2-0 in Mountain West Conference play by blanking Air Force 7-0 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Saturday.

The Lady Rebels improved to 9-5 overall while the Falcons fell to 8-9 (0-2).

UNLV began the morning by sweeping three doubles matches for one team point. Winning easily for the hosts were Elena Gantcheva and Sharon Marin at No. 1, Anne Claire Ortiz-Luis and Linda Tempelfelde at No. 2 and 55th-ranked Gyorgyi Zsiros and Claire Smith on court three.

UNLV did not lose a set in singles play either. At the top position, Gantcheva, ranked 22nd, downed Kat Bushey 6-4, 6-2, to raise her record to 27-4 overall and 11-2 in dual matches.

Zsiros won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 over Karissa Walker, Ortiz-Luis shut out Lauren Wilson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, Cindy Treber eased by Liza Vaccaro 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, Smith won 6-1, 6-1 over Katie Tomkie at No. 5 and Tempelfelde got by Miclynn Crail 7-6, 6-3 on court six.

UNLV closes out its 2005 home schedule by facing No. 45 New Mexico on Easter Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. The showdown with the Lobos, who downed 33rd-ranked San Diego State 5-2 in Las Vegas Saturday, will mark the final home appearance for seniors Zsiros and Ortiz-Luis.
