End-Of-Week Whitewash

LAS VEGAS - The 30th-ranked UNLV women's team did not lose a set en route to a 7-0 victory over Utah State at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Friday.

Fighting through sometimes rainy weather, the Lady Rebels improved to 4-1 while the Aggies fell to 4-4.

Starting the day with singles play, UNLV got straight-set wins on all courts. At the top spot, 21st-ranked Elena Gantcheva improved to a stunning 20-2 in her first collegiate season by downing Lindsey Bennion 6-3, 6-1. Senior Gyorgyi Zsiros beat Jill Smith 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 while Anne Claire Ortiz-Luis improved to 10-4 this year with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Carolyn Stephens at No. 3.

Also winning easily for the home team were Cindy Treber at No. 4, Claire Smith at No.5 and Linda Tempelfelde on court six.

The Lady Rebels then picked up their final team point by sweeping three doubles matches, which improved the squad's doubles record to a shining 11-1 in 2005.

UNLV will next be in action on Sunday when it hosts UC Riverside beginning at 10 a.m.
