LAS VEGAS - The 40th-ranked UNLV women's team earned the No. 3 seed and will play No. 6 Colorado State in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship, the league announced Monday.
The tournament will take place April 28-30 at the Barnes Tennis Center on the campus of San Diego State.
The Lady Rebels (12-7 overall and 5-2 in the league) are scheduled to face the Rams (12-8/2-5) beginning at 10 a.m. next Thursday. The winner of that match will take on the winner of New Mexico (2) vs. Wyoming (7) on the following day, also at 10 a.m. The championship match is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, at noon.
UNLV is looking for its third MWC tournament title (2000 and 2002) and is led by league MVP candidate Elena Gantcheva. The 28th-ranked freshman stands 29-6 overall and 5-2 in MWC play.
Head Coach Kevin Cory brings a sparkling 10-3 all-time record into the event. His team has been eliminated in the semifinal round by BYU the last two years, but UNLV cannot possibly meet the 28th-ranked and top-seeded Cougars until the championship round this time around.
