FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The 39th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team went on the road for the first time all season and dominated Colorado State 6-1 on Saturday at a cold Rolland Moore Racquet Club.
The Lady Rebels, who were playing for the first time since March 27, improved to 10-6 overall and 2-1 in the Mountain West Conference while the Rams fell to 12-6/2-4.
With the threat of snow in the area, UNLV began the afternoon by winning two of three doubles matches for one team point. Winning for the visitors were Elena Gantcheva and Sharon Marin at the top position and 60th-ranked Gyorgyi Zsiros and Claire Smith at No. 3.
In singles play, UNLV won four matches in straight sets. At the top spot, 28th-ranked Gantcheva downed Dasha Zhurin 6-2, 6-2 to raise her record as a freshman to 28-5, which already ties her with Marianne Vallin (1996) for 10th-most single victories in a season by a Lady Rebel.
Zsiros became the sixth UNLV player to win 75 career matches with a 6-1, 6-4 sweep of Emily Kirchem at No. 2. Anne Claire Ortiz-Luis won 6-3, 6-0 over Carla Pallares at No. 4 and Cindy Treber bested Jessica Jones 6-3, 6-3 on court five. Smith earned UNLV's final point via super-tiebreaker, 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4) over Alex Paganetti at No. 6.
"It's nice to get back on track with a win over a Mountain West opponent," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "Now we have to get ready to face another league team tomorrow in different conditions."
UNLV will face Wyoming on indoor courts Sunday morning in Fort Collins.
