FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Christine Spence grabbed the lead in the first event of the heptathlon and didn't relinquish it as she racked up 3,231 points in the opening day of the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championships at Jack Christiansen Track.
Spence won the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 13.99 for 980 points after the opening event and she went on to win the high jump (5'-6.00") and the 200 meters (25.04).
Colorado State's Katie Lloyd is second with 3,055 points, while the Rams' Cristina Gourdin is third with 2,993 points. San Diego State's Janine Polischuk is fourth with 2,936 points and BYU's Liis Berendsen is fifth with 2,899 points.
The only event that Spence didn't win in the first four events of the seven-event competition was the shot put, which she placed ninth in with a heave of 33'-3.00".
Teri Trautwein of UNLV also competed in the heptathlon for the Rebels and is in 12th place with 2,349 points.
Dan Feltman of New Mexico leads the decathlon with 3,724 points and Devin Howe of BYU is in second with 3,618 points.
The second day of the meet begins Thursday at noon with the men's decathlon 110-meter hurdles, while the women's heptathlon long jump begins at 12:30 p.m. The multi events conclude tomorrow, while the rest of the field opens competition Friday.
