Record-Breaking Rebels

July 21, 2005

LAS VEGAS - UNLV's men's squad has once again earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association Academic All-America status, which capped off another record-breaking year in the classroom by the Rebel netters.

The ITA team award is open to any program that has a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above. In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must be a varsity letterwinner, have a GPA of at least 3.50 for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.

In its second year under head coach Owen Hambrook, the men's team earned the honor for the second straight year while a program-record-tying four individuals were named ITA Scholar-Athletes: 2005 Mountain West Conference Player of the Year Henner Nehles along with repeat-honorees Aviram Salomon, Romain Massaro and Milos Blagojevic.

The men's tennis program also recently boasted a league-leading and school-record six players that earned 2005 Academic All-MWC honors: Blagojevic, Massaro, Nehles and Salomon as well as a pair of newcomers, David Campbell and Jonathan Hooper.

To be eligible for selection, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and be a starter or significant contributor. Combined with the four honored women's players, the school's total of 10 academic honorees was second in the league only to New Mexico's 11.

Another combination of four netters won MWC Scholar-Athlete honors: Blagojevic, Massaro, Nehles and Salomon. To be eligible for selection, players must have competed during the past season, completed at least two semesters at their school and carry at least a 3.5 grade point average.
