Oct. 20, 2006

SAN DIEGO - UNLV has one doubles team still alive in main-draw action after Friday's second day of competition at the Wilson/ITA Women's Tennis Regional at the Barnes Tennis Center.

The duo of Nikol Dimitrova and Claire Smith downed Sarah Yang and Becky Duesler of UCLA 8-3 to advance to the Round of 16.

In singles, two of the remaining Lady Rebels won their third-round match to start the day but both were later eliminated by high seeds in the Round of 16.

Dimitrova blanked Samantha Cappella of Hawaii 6-0, 6-0 before falling to second-seeded Bianca Dulgheru of Pepperdine in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0. Freshman Kritina Nedelcheva upset 17th-seeded Katy Williams of Long Beach State 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 but was later downed by eighth-seeded Alex McGoodwin of UCLA 6-2, 6-1.

No less than 17 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 2-5 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by The Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus.
