Stanford Flips Script On Lady Rebels

Feb. 10, 2006

PALO ALTO, Calif. - After shutting out its first four opponents of 2006, the UNLV women's tennis team saw the script flipped by No. 1-ranked Stanford on Friday.

The 38th-ranked Lady Rebels only won one set against the defending national champions in falling 7-0 at the Taube Family Tennis Center as the powerful Cardinal improved to 7-0.

UNLV (4-1) began the day by losing all three doubles matches as Stanford took a 1-0 lead.

In singles, only senior Cindy Treber pushed her opponent to a third set as she lost the decisive super-tiebreaker to Whitney Deason 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4).

In a battle of two of the nation's top singles players, Stanford senior and two-time NCAA champion Amber Liu rallied in the second set to finish off eighth-ranked sophomore Elena Gantcheva 6-3, 6-3 at the top spot.

"Despite the score, I feel we competed well as a team today," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "You're talking about playing a team that just rolled through the national indoor championships without losing a point. There is no doubt that Stanford is the class of college tennis. Now we have to turn around and face a big challenge on Saturday."

The Lady Rebels will look to rebound on Saturday morning by playing at No. 6 Cal.
