LAS VEGAS - Ashley Owens was named the Mountain West Conference indoor track and field co-athlete of the week after she set the UNLV and league record in the 60 meters last weekend at the Albuquerque Invitational.
Owens, a transfer from LSU, finished with a blistering time of 7.27 in the 60 meters, winning the championship in the event and setting the Rebel and MWC records in the process. Owens was clocked at 7.25, but with the elevation conversion it was a time of 7.27 since Albuquerque is at 5,000+ feet. The previous best UNLV and MWC time was 7.28, set by Ayanna Hutchinson during the 2000 indoor season. It was the second-straight meet that Owens had won the 60 meters, as she took top honors in the event at the United Heritage Invitational.
Owens is the fourth Rebel indoor track and field athlete to earn the award since UNLV joined the league. Chantel Yates and Michele Davis won the award in 2000, David earned the accolade again in 2002 and Halima Decree won the honor in 2005.
Owens shared this week's award with Erin Asay of San Diego State while Jackson Langat of TCU earned the men's honor. It was the first weekly award for all three.
UNLV wraps up its indoor season at the MWC Indoor Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M. on Feb. 23-25.
