WAHIAWA, Hawaii - The No. 7 UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round 4-under-par 284 at the John Burns Intercollegiate on Friday at the Leilehua Golf Course (par 72, 6,917 yards) to finish the tournament in 11th place.
SMU turned in the best final-round score with a 15-under 273 and captured the team title with a 54-hole total of 41-under 823. BYU finished one shot back at 40-under after shooting 11-under during the final round. New Mexico finished third at 34-under, San Diego State was fourth at 33-under and Colorado State rounded out the top five at 32-under. UNLV finished the tournament at 20-under 844, 21 shots back.
Individually, SMU's Brandon DeStefano forced a playoff with Auburn's Jay Moseley by firing a final-round 6-under 66 and the two tied for first at 14-under 202. DeStefano won the tournament on the second hole of the playoff.
UNLV's top performer was sophomore Jarred Texter, who finished strong with a 4-under 68 and tied for 12th place at 10-under for the tournament. Senior Andres Gonzales and freshman Blake Trimble both tied for 42nd at 3-under, while sophomore C.J. Gatto tied for 60th at 1-under and freshman Seung-Su Han tied for 84th at 5-over.
The tournament featured 19 teams and 106 individuals.
The Rebels next action will be at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship at Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas, March 10-12.
