Rebels Struggle On First Day In Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 7 UNLV men's golf team shot a 4-over-par 292 on the first day of play at the National Invitational Tournament on Sunday at OMNI Tucson National (par 72, 7,148 yards) and sits in 12th place, 15 shots off the lead.

UCLA fired an opening-round 11-under 277 and leads Arizona State (10-under 278) by one shot. Host Arizona is third at 7-under 281, followed by New Mexico in fourth at 6-under 282 and Minnesota in fifth at 3-under 285.

UCLA's Erik Flores shot a first-round 7-under 65 and leads all individuals. Fresno State's Jason Anthony and Arizona State's Alejandro Canizares are tied for second at 5-under.

UNLV senior Andres Gonzales led all Rebel players with a first-round 1-under 71 and is tied for 20th place, six shots off the lead.

Other Rebel scores: sophomore Jarred Texter (72, E, T30th), freshman Seung-Su Han (74, +2, T48th), sophomore C.J. Gatto (75, +3, T64th) and sophomore Matt Kinsinger (78, +6, T79th).

The tournament, which features 15 teams and 84 individuals, will continue with 18 holes on Monday and conclude with 18 on Tuesday.
