Rebels Slosh Through Invite

April 15, 2006

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Although rain fell for most of the day causing several UNLV track and field athletes to scratch out of events, the Rebels still place several in the top 10 on Friday at the Long Beach State Invite.

Senior runner Deanna Appuglise was the highest individual finisher for the Rebels, coming in sixth in the 400 meters in a time of 57.35 on a water-logged Jack Rose Track. Appuglise was one of a few sprinters who ran for UNLV in the wet conditions.

Senior distance runner Katie Hughes also fought through the elements to earn a top-10 finish, crossing the line in 10th place in the 10,000 meters with a time of 19:26.23.

UNLV's 4x100 relay squad was impressive, finishing second with a time of 46.68, with West Virginia only clocking a faster time. The Rebels fielded a second 4x100 relay team and that squad finished eighth with a time of 50.15.

On the field Monique Humphries and Olivia Raya both had successful days, earning two top-10 places each. Humphries finished seventh in the shot put (38'-1.50") and added a ninth in the hammer throw (148'-11"). Two weeks ago Humphries set the Rebel school record in the event with a toss of 159'-6.00" at the UNLV Invitational. Raya placed seventh in the discus (124'-3") and added an eighth place in the shot put (37'-1.50").

The Rebels remain in California today to run in the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., at Hilmer Lodge Stadium as with Lekeisha Lawson, Brittney Bullocks, Lauren Johnson, Appuglise, Tanesha Carr and Ashley Patin are all entered in running events.
