TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 6 UNLV men's golf team is tied for the lead after the first two rounds of play at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational played on Saturday at ASU's Karsten Golf Course (par 71, 7,017 yards).
The Rebels (279-270--549, -19), followed up a first-round 5-under-par 279 with a tournament-low second-round score of 14-under 270 for a two-round total of 19-under 549 and are tied with San Diego State (277-272--549, -19) for first. Kansas State (287-271--558, -10) and Arizona (278-280--558, -10) are both nine shots off the lead in a tie for third place at 10-under, while Stanford (283-276--559, -9) rounds out the top five, 10 shots back at 9-under.
UNLV is attempting to defend the team title that it won last year's Thunderbird Invitational with a 7-over 859.
Kansas State's Ben Kern (69-65--134, -8) has the tournament's individual lead at 8-under after firing a second-round 6-under 65. UNLV freshman Seung-Su Han (69-66--135, -7) and San Diego State's Aaron Goldberg (70-65--135, -7) are both tied for second place, one shot back.
Other UNLV scores: senior Andres Gonzales (71-68--139, -3; T12th), sophomore C.J. Gatto (70-69--139, -3; T12th), freshman Blake Trimble (69-70--139, -3; T12th) and sophomore Jarred Texter (77-67--144, +2; T37th).
The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Sunday.
