ORLANDO, Fla. - The No. 7 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 1-under-par 287 on Thursday and is in third place, three shots off the lead, after the first round of play at the NCAA East Regional at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club (par 72, 7,179 yards).
The Rebels were one of just three teams to break par as the tournament began under sunny, but windy conditions.
Top-seeded Georgia has the tournament's lead after firing a first-round 4-under 284 and is ahead of Wake Forest by one shot. UNLV follows in third with Rhode Island in fourth at even-par 288 and Texas Tech rounding out the top five at 1-over.
North Carolina's Jonathan Jackson shot a 6-under 66 and leads the field by one shot. Georgia's Brendon Todd is second at 5-under.
Freshman Blake Trimble leads the Rebels and is in fifth place and three shots back after turning in a 3-under 69.
Other Rebel scores: sophomore Jarred Texter (70, -2; T6th), freshman Seung-Su Han (72, E, T15th), senior Andres Gonzales (76, +4; T66th) and sophomore Matt Kinsinger (76, +4; T66th).
Play will continue with 18 holes on Friday beginning at 7 a.m. EDT and conclude with 18 more on Saturday.
The top 10 teams and two individuals not on advancing teams will move on to the championship finals, which will be held May 31-June 3 in Sunriver, Ore.
