July 27, 2006

LAS VEGAS - Men's swimming's Joe Bartoch has been named the 2006 UNLV Sportsman of the Year, while women's golf's Da Sol Chung won the Sportswoman of the Year award, the UNLV athletics department announced Thursday.

Bartoch completed his senior year this past spring by being named honorable mention for All-America honors after leading UNLV to a ninth place finish at the NCAA Championships in the 200 free relay, which was the highest national finish for a relay team in school history. Bartoch also placed 19th in the 100 fly at the NCAA Championships helping UNLV place 28th as a team.

Bartoch, from London, Ontario, Canada, is a two-time Academic All-District First Team selection and was named the Mountain West Conference Swimmer of the Year this past season. He is the MWC and UNLV record holder in the 100 fly and the 100 free, was a member of the UNLV and MWC record-setting 200 medley, 400 medley and 200 free relay teams and he ranks fourth in program history in the 50 free.

Chung, from Seoul, Korea, finished her freshman year at UNLV by finishing third at the NCAA Championships, which was the highest finish ever for a UNLV or MWC women's golfer. She was named NGCA First Team All-America, which marked the first time a UNLV women's golfer earned first-team honors.

The MWC Player of the Year, Chung finished the season ranked 11th in the country by Golfweek. She won medalist honors at the 2006 MWC Tournament and turned in the lowest seasonal stroke average in the conference (72.70), which is now the MWC record.

Chung qualified for the U.S. Women's Open and became the first women's golfer in UNLV history to play in an LPGA Major.

The UNLV Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards were voted on by head coaches, administrators and sports information personnel at UNLV.
