Aug. 25, 2006

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's basketball season will get off to an exciting start on Nov. 7 with the UNLV Legends & Friends Classic golf event, a Runnin' Rebel alumni basketball game and former Rebel great Greg Anthony's jersey retirement during its exhibition game against Dixie State College.

Activities will commence on Nov. 6 with a 7 p.m. pairings party at Dragon Ridge Country Club at MacDonald Highlands, which will also host the four-man scramble golf outing the following morning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

"It will be exciting to have so many former great Runnin' Rebels back in town," UNLV head coach Lon Kruger said. "These players are Runnin' Rebel basketball and are responsible for our outstanding history. We hope our fans take advantage of this opportunity to meet and visit with these players during the Nov. 6 and 7 activities."

Cost for the event is $2,000 for three players, who will be matched up with a celebrity fourth player (to be determined at the pairings party). Included in the package will be the pairings party, a continental breakfast before the golf event, lunch at the course, tee prizes, an awards ceremony, tickets to the alumni game as well as the exhibition game. Anthony's jersey retirement ceremony will take place at halftime of the exhibition game.

Anthony's number 50 will be the seventh player jersey to be retired by the school. He played at UNLV from 1988-91, appeared in two NCAA Final Fours and was a key member of the 1990 national championship team. He is a member of UNLV's 1,000-point scoring club with 1,301 career points and still holds UNLV records for most assists in a career (838), most steals in a season (106) and most steals in a career (275). He is fifth on the UNLV career chart in 3-point field goals made with 137.

Anthony was selected in the 1991 NBA Draft with the 12th overall pick by the New York Knicks and played in the league for 12 seasons with seven teams. He is presently a studio analyst for ESPN's NBA coverage.
