Rigorous Road Ahead For Lady Rebels

Sept. 19, 2006

LAS VEGAS - No less than 12 of the 22 teams on the UNLV women's tennis 2007 schedule were ranked at the end of last season, including defending NCAA champion Stanford.

"Once again this season we have a very challenging schedule," UNLV eighth-year head coach Kevin Cory said. "We are willing to put it on the line against top teams in the country year after year and 2007 is no different."

After a pair of individual tournaments in California in October, the team hosts the annual Freeman Memorial Invitational on Jan. 12-14, 2007. A collection of singles and doubles players from top programs such as Stanford, Florida, USC, UCLA, Arizona State, Georgia Tech and Miami will battle UNLV's contingent leading into the dual-match season.

The Lady Rebels will make only one road trip during their non-conference schedule, visiting UCLA (ranked 16th last year) and then Pepperdine (14th) in early March. Coming to play at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on campus this season are programs such as Fresno State (20th), Long Beach State (26th), Florida International (35), San Diego (55th) and Furman (64th). The highlight of the impressive slate, however, will be a home match vs. No. 1 Stanford on March 28 as part of UNLV's senior day.

The Mountain West Conference schedule opens March 23 vs. Wyoming. Also coming to Las Vegas are Colorado State and Air Force. UNLV will travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to take on New Mexico and TCU and then close out the regular-season April 13-15 in San Diego vs. Utah, BYU and San Diego State.

The MWC Championship will be held this spring on the campus of Air Force from April 25-28. The NCAA regionals are scheduled for May 11-13 and the round of 16 and individual national tournaments will take place at the University of Georgia from May 17-28.
