LAS VEGAS - With a rare winter storm moving into the valley and temperatures dipping into the 30s, the schedule for the opening day of the Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships was limited to just one round of doubles on Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

Host UNLV, however, had a good day with victories in both of its matches. In the top flight, the duo of Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva upset third-seeded and 28th-ranked Dominika Dieskova and Anna Cecilia Olivos of Oregon 8-2 to advance. Gantcheva and Nedeltcheva will face Georgia Tech's Kristi Miller and Whitney McCray in the quarterfinals.

Also wining for the Lady Rebels were Nikol Dimitrova and Linda Tempelfelde over Laila Abdala and Amanda Martin of Arizona State 8-4 in what was the one and only match in the second flight.

"To start out 2-0 with the type of talent in this tournament is a great beginning to our spring season and shows that we've strengthened our doubles game," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "Hopefully the weather will hold and we'll continue our momentum through the weekend."

The tournament, which is free and open to the public, will continue on Saturday - weather permitting -- with doubles at 11 a.m. PST and then follow with a round of singles.
