Hortness Earns Weekly Honors

LAS VEGAS - UNLV senior Richard Hortness was named Mountain West Conference Men's Swimmer of the Meet it was announced on Thursday by the league. It's the first career weekly honor for Hortness, who helped the Rebels upset Arizona State in the season opener for both teams on Oct. 13.

In the victory over the Sun Devils, the Medicine Hat, Alberta native won two individual races awhile helping the 200-medley relay team to a win and the 400-free relay to a second place finish. Hortness placed first in the 50 free in a conference-best time of 20.86, and followed that with a 46.00 in the 100 free to touch in first. He then bettered his 100 free time in the 400 free relay by leading off in a time of 45.69, currently the best-time in the MWC, to help the Rebels finish second, and in the day's first event, he anchored the 200 medley relay to a first-place swim in 1:32.16.

The next action for the UNLV men's team will come on Friday, Nov. 9, when it goes up to Provo, Utah to face BYU.
