Gantcheva Going On

SAN DIEGO - UNLV star Elena Gantcheva won three times on Saturday to move into the semifinals of both singles and doubles of the Wilson/ITA West Regional Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

The ninth-seeded and 50th-ranked senior from Sofia, Bulgaria, rallied to win her quarterfinal singles match over Andrea Remynse of UCLA 1-6 7-5, 6-3. She will face Julia Trunk of San Diego State on Sunday.

Gantcheva also won twice in doubles play along with partner Kristinta Nedeltcheva. The fifth-ranked and second-seeded duo downed Kanykey Koichumanova and Canna Furuta of Cal State Northridge 8-4 in the Round of 16 and then defeated 46th-ranked and seventh-seeded Remynse and Tracy Lin of UCLA 8-4 in the quarters.

No less than 17 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 3-6 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by The Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus.
