Gantcheva Splits In Consolation

LAS VEGAS - Following Tuesday's first-round loss in the qualifying draw, UNLV senior Elena Gantcheva rebounded to earn her first win over a ranked opponent this season at the 23rd Annual Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Tennis Championships.

Gantcheva, ranked 50th in the nation in singles, downed No. 36 Gira Schofield of South Carolina 6-3, 6-3. However, she was then defeated by No. 83 Luaren Lui of Northwestern 6-2, 6-4 to finish her singles appearance.

Standing third in all-time singles victories at UNLV, Gantcheva moved her career record to 87-28, including 4-2 during this young season.

The native of Sofia, Bulgaria, will now team with sophomore Kristina Nedeltcheva in the main draw of the All-American doubles tournament, which starts Thursday.
