LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's tennis team won the doubles point vs. San Diego State but was then swept in singles play en route to its first loss in Mountain West Conference action at the Aztec Tennis Center on Friday.
With the 6-1 final, the Rebels fell to 8-11 overall and 1-1 in the league while the Aztecs improved 10-6 and 1-0 on the year.
UNLV began the day by taking two of three doubles matches for one team point. Despite losing the top match 9-7, the Rebels won at No. 3 as David Campbell and Slavko Bijelica emerged 8-6. On court two, Wesley Burrows and Jonathan Hooper outlasted their opponents 9-8 to clinch the point for the visitors.
Singles play featured a battle between two of the league's premier players at the top position and Markus Dickhardt, ranked 52nd, fought off No. 59 Elliot Wronski 6-1, 5-7, 6-1. Wronski, who slipped to 12-5 in dual matches this spring, had defeated four of his last five ranked opponents before Friday.
Also extending his match was Wesley Burrows at No. 3 as Anthony Gomez finally won 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
The Rebels will remain in San Diego and play No. 72 Utah on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
