Rebels Get Started At MWC Championships

UNLV women's track and field junior Monique Humphries earned her team points and sophomore Meia Tezeno qualified for a final during the first full day of competition at the 2007 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championships on Friday.

The meet actually got underway Wednesday with the heptathlon and decathlon, which concluded Thursday at the SDSU Sports Deck, and the first full day of competition for head coach Barbara Ferrell-Edmonson's team was today.

Humphries earned the Rebels three points by finishing sixth in the hammer with a throw of 158'-5.00" in the event. Humphries has emerged as UNLV's premier hammer thrower, as the junior holds the UNLV record with a mark of 165'-7.00".

Tezeno ran the second-fastest time during qualifying in the 100 meter hurdles, crossing the line in a blistering 13.81 to earn a spot in Saturday's finals. Tezeno was just behind Kishelle Paul of TCU, who ran a time of 13.74.

Eight events have been scored and BYU has the team lead with 101 points, followed by Colorado State's 64 and then host San Diego State's 45 points. New Mexico is next with 40 points, followed by Utah (21.50), TCU (14), Wyoming (12), Air Force (11.50) and UNLV (3)

Saturday's final day will feature a trio of Rebels who have strong shots at earning points at the league meet.

Rebel freshman Charlotte Browning has the top time this year in the 1,500 meters with a 4:22.22, ran at the Steve Scott Invitational. Browning's time is almost a full second ahead of the second-place time of Heidi Magill of BYU, who has a time of 4:23.20. Aja Evans has the third-best mark in the shot put with a distance of 48'-4.50" while Tezeno will be running in the 100 hurdle finals as well. UNLV's 400 and 1,600 meter relay teams both have the seventh-best times in the MWC with marks of 46.39 (400) and 3:54.86 (1,600).
