Rebel Schedule Released

Sept. 20, 2007

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's tennis program will prepare to defend its Mountain West Conference tournament championship by facing a solid diet of quality non-conference and league opponents, as the program's schedule was released Thursday.

No less than nine of the Rebels' 21 dual-match opponents in 2008 were included in the final ITA/FILA Rankings in May.

"Once again we will face a challenging schedule in non-conference play and the Mountain West, as usual, will be deep," UNLV fifth-year head coach Owen Hambrook said. "This schedule offers us a chance to get wins over some ranked teams and then challenge once again for the league title."

The fall season includes select members of the team taking part in the annual ITA Regional championship tournament on Oct. 17-21 at Las Vegas' Stacy Darling Tennis Center. UNLV also will host an individual tournament in early November that is scheduled to feature players from programs such as Illinois, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Fresno State.

The team season kicks off with Southern Miss coming to the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Feb. 1, which begins an eight-match homestand that is highlighted by a visit from Texas Tech (33rd last season) on Feb. 8.

UNLV's first road trip takes it to Fresno State on March 8. A pair of opponents from the Southeastern Conference come in next (Mississippi State and South Carolina) along with Ball State. An ensuing trip to the Bay Area sets up matches with San Francisco and then Cal (42) before league play debuts.

The Rebels host BYU (62) on March 27, Air Force on March 28 and TCU (68) on March 29 in a match that will serve as Senior Day. After a final non-conference match vs. UC Irvine in early April, the regular-season ends with three neutral-site meetings in Provo, Utah, against New Mexico (53), Utah and San Diego State (46).

The MWC Championship will be held this spring on the campus of TCU from April 24-26. The NCAA regionals are scheduled for May 9-10 at campus sites to be determined while the round of 16 and individual national tournaments will take place at the University of Tulsa from May 16-26.
